Description

Digital scan of black and white photograph of the mess hall line at the rest camp in the Philippines where Carl Doering was stationed during World War II. The photo shows a line of soldiers waiting to enter an open faced structure with palm trees above.

Carl Doering of Georgetown, Texas, was drafted and trained in San Antonio, Texas; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Fort Ord, California. He served in the Philippine Islands in the 38th Army Division. His unit engaged in many battles with the Japanese in the Philippines. After the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in August 1945, Doering's unit was ordered to accept the surrender of the Japanese in the Philippines. Doering was present when the Japanese handed over their swords, the sign of surrender. After the Japanese surrender, Doering's unit (and others) were in charge of the Japanese prisoners-of-war in the Philippines.
