His unit engaged in many battles with the Japanese in the Philippines. After the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in August 1945, Doering's unit was ordered to accept the surrender of the Japanese in the Philippines. Doering was present when the Japanese handed over their swords, the sign of surrender. After the Japanese surrender, Doering's unit (and others) were in charge of the Japanese prisoners-of-war in the Philippines.
