War (World War II).
Description
A censored United States Soldier's Mail postcard from Howard Norman to Mrs. J W Norman in Taylor, Texas. The front of the postcard indicates that it had been passed by the censor. On the back of the postcard, Norman elected to tell his family that he was well and a letter would follow at the first opportunity.
The postcard is dated December 22, 1941. Norman had been stationed in Pearl Harbor prior to the Japanese bombing of the port, but he shipped out before the attack. However, his family heard no word from him until this postcard arrived, telling them that he was well.
Howard Norman (1922-1943), from Norman's Crossing in Williamson County, was an aerial gunner who joined the United States Army Air Corps before the United States entered World War II. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor prior to the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, but he shipped out before the attack began. His family, however, did not know he had left and believed him to be in Pearl Harbor on the day of the attack. They received a letter on December 22, 1941, that he was well and had not been in Pearl Harbor.
Norman served in New Zealand, Australia, and India during the war. He went missing in action in 1943 while on a bombing raid over Rangoon, Burma. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal, and a Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice during the war.
