War (World War II).
Description
A program for the film showings at the Palace Theater in Georgetown, Texas, for January 1943. The program lists the days of the week, with the corresponding films showing on each day. Films from actors such as Judy Garland, Barbara Stanwyck, Hedy Lamarr, Bette Davis, John Wayne, and Betty Grable can be seen.
In the center of the program is a box that reads, "For Victory... Buy War Bonds!"
Williamson County resident J. C. Johnson recalls visiting the Palace Theater during the war. He and his friends enjoyed visiting the Ritz Theater because it played cowboy and alien type movies, but occasionally he would go to the Palace Theater in Georgetown with his mother (he recalled the Palace Theater playing "love movies"). The highlight of going there was the nickelodeon machine that would hang Japanese Emperor Hirohito or German leader Adolf Hitler (he could not recall which) after a dime was put in. The patron turned a crank, the platform would fall, hang the villain, raise him back up for the next kid, and give the patron his war bond stamp.
Georgetown resident Laura Sue Smith also recalls that during World War II, children who saved ten paper wrappers from bread rolls for salvage could bring the wrappers to the Palace Theater and see a movie for free.
