Description

A black box with gold gilding along the edges, with the words 'Air Medal' on the front. Pictured alongside the box is the Air Medal. The ribbon is blue and gold striped, and the medal depicts an eagle holding a lightning bolt in each of its talons. On the back of the medal is the inscription, "SGT. HOWARD B. NORMAN, A. C."

Howard Norman (1922-1943), from Norman's Crossing in Williamson County, was an aerial gunner who joined the United States Army Air Corps before the United States entered World War II. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor prior to the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, but he shipped out before the attack began. His family, however, did not know he had left and believed him to be in Pearl Harbor on the day of the attack. They received a letter on December 22, 1941, that he was well and had not been in Pearl Harbor.

Norman served in New Zealand, Australia, and India during the war. He went missing in action in 1943 while on a bombing raid over Rangoon, Burma. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal, and a Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice during the war.
