Ed Olson, from Taylor, Texas, entered the Army Air Corps in 1943 and trained in California, New Mexico, and South Dakota. He served in England, and was awarded the European Theater of Operations (ETO) Ribbon with two Battle Stars.
Olson flew 10 B-17 bombing missions from England then returned to Laredo, Texas as a flight instructor for the remainder of the war. He would have pilots get flight hours in training for B-17s by flying them up to Taylor, including down main street and diving towards his mother in the field when she hung laundry out to dry.
