Description

A black and white photograph of Leo Darby, standing on crutches in a black robe. He is standing on the grass in front of a dark wood building. On the back of the photograph is written "Jan. 13, 1945 | 4107 U.S. Army Hosp. England."

This photo was probably taken after he had his leg amputated when he was injured on duty jumping a ditch with a load of bazooka rockets.

Leo Darby (1914-2004) was born on March 18, 1914, in Florence, Texas, to parents John and Irene Darby. He served in the Fourth Infantry Division, US Army and was involved in the storming of the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. PFC Darby was first injured at St. Lo in France and a second time in Belgium during an attack on German units holding a forest there. After his wounds healed in an English hospital, he returned to active duty. Darby was awarded the Purple Heart and numerous other medals during the war, but he did not receive his Purple Heart until 1991.
