Description

A black box with gold gilding along the edges, with the words 'Purple Heart' on the front. Pictured alongside the box is the Purple Heart Medal. The ribbon is purple and white striped, and the medal depicts a coat of arms and a side profile of George Washington. On the back of the medal is the inscription, "For Military Merit / Duncan S. Hughes."

Duncan Hughes (1914-1942) of Georgetown, Texas, was killed in action during World War II, as he was shot down over New Guinea. He was a bombardier in the Army Air Corps, Pacific Theatre. Prior to his military service, he was a member of the House, 47th legislature, Democrat, elected 1940. He was the first member of the Texas legislature to be killed in action. He completed training in June 1942 and was killed August 1942. He is interred at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila, Philippines.
