War (World War II).
Description
A naval subpoena from the "Royal Court of Neptune" for Howard Norman, Private 1st Class, to appear before "Neptunus Rex" to face charges of "subscribing to Better Homes & Gardens." It is signed by Davy Jones, Scribe. The subpoena was given to Howard Norman while he was stationed on the U. S. S. Republic, on December 6, 1941, the day before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Howard Norman (1922-1943), from Norman's Crossing in Williamson County, was an aerial gunner who joined the United States Army Air Corps before the United States entered World War II. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor prior to the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, but he shipped out before the attack began. His family, however, did not know he had left and believed him to be in Pearl Harbor on the day of the attack. They received a letter on December 22, 1941, that he was well and had not been in Pearl Harbor.
Norman served in New Zealand, Australia, and India during the war. He went missing in action in 1943 while on a bombing raid over Rangoon, Burma. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal, and a Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice during the war.
