Black and white photograph of Ben Hartman sitting on top of a pile of empty artillery shells. His left knee is drawn up into his body while the right is hanging down and resting on the bottom layer of shells. A plane can be seen in the background, which sports a tail that has a large "W" with a circle around it. On the photo is written "500 lbs. ea., WWII"

Ben Gilbert Hartman (1916-1996) was born in Thrall, Texas. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1943 and trained in California, Texas, and Nebraska. He served in the Marianas, and was awarded the American Theater of Operations (ATO) service medal, APO ribbon, 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct medal, and Victory Ribbons. He married Myrtle Horbratsch in 1946.
