Description

A photograph of Ben Hartman standing cross-legged with his left hand resting on a wooden windmill. He is wearing a white shirt with light-colored pants. In the background there are tents and wooden beams.

During the war, Hartman used his skills to make fully-functioning machinery. He manufactured a washing machine out of the windmill seen in the above photo. He also made a refrigerator out of a steel bomb crate and sawdust for the important task of keeping beer cold on the warm island of Tinian.

Ben Gilbert Hartman (1916-1996) was born in Thrall, Texas. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1943 and trained in California, Texas, and Nebraska. He served in the Marianas, and was awarded the American Theater of Operations (ATO) service medal, APO ribbon, 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct medal, and Victory Ribbons. He married Myrtle Horbratsch in 1946.
