Myrtle Horbratsch was born in 1922 in Taylor, Texas. At age 19, she moved to Washington, D. C. She was employed at the Pentagon typing and communicating orders to training schools and students. She remained in D.C. until the end of the war, only returning home to Taylor twice in four years.
In 1946, Myrtle married Ben Gilbert Hartman, a sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps.
